image

20130617_151456

This week, along with the body part theme, we were going to learn about five sense: Hearing, Touching, Smelling, Seeing and Tasting.

HEARING

For hearing, I had prepared three types of materials putting into six same size of bottles. I tried to look for the materials that were different in size.. something that had huge different in size. Finally what I used were: Rice, Red Bean, and Egg (toys egg.. of course ~).  Each two bottles will be having the same materials inside, and required Debo to find out which two bottles having the same materials by shaking it.

 SEEING

Well, this was some sort of “I Spy” game. This was to train Debo the sense of seeing and observation skills. I choose to fill up the bottle with rice as it was easily get and easier see what inside the bottle. She was pretty interested in playing this and able to call out most of the items in the bottle. The items that I prepared were: moon, star, heart shape, chicken, egg, duck, corn, tomato, apple, banana, and tree.

After the I spy game, now was Debo favourite activities --- pulling out the rice and scooping it from one to another bottle. Well, can treat it as fine motor skill activity too.

Before the situation lost control, I had quickly got the rice back and required Debo to play only the toys inside the bottle.

 TOUCHING

For touching, I had prepared things that are made by different types of texture, so that she could experience feeling of: soft, hard, smooth, crude, light and heavy. Items we had: Cardboard, sandpaper, block, sponge, smooth & crude handkerchiefs, thread made bookmark, mahjong paper, green felt paper, and hard board.

Debo took out everything from the basket one by one, pressing, touching, knocking… finally, she took the handkerchief and wipe the basket. A good cleaner we have in our family … ~

  SMELLING

For the sense of smelling, I had prepared six bottles with some cotton inside bottles in order to “store” the smell longer. Each two bottles having the same ingredient inside: Lemon, Rosemary leaves, and just cotton with some water to show none flavour smell. I tried to let Debo guess which two bottles having the same smell and she quite interested in guessing it too.

 TASTING

20130701_125932

While learning sense of taste, I thought to have Debo learn the Chinese words of different types of taste.

20130701_125900

Ingredients we had for the tasting were: Lemon (SOUR), Honey (SWEET), Salt (SALTY), Coffee (BITTERNESS). No tasting for the SPICY, but I did put a little chilli at the side just for showing the taste of spice. After all, she did tried spicy food before, when she insisted to “have” my Curry Noodles.. so she was pretty clever in identify what foods are spicy and not going to “INSIST” for it now.

Pretty funny.. She likes the honey and non stopping eating it.

Finally after showing everything, we had some cups of lemon honey juice as our tea time. ^_^

Pretend Play – Restaurant & Market Place

20130529_154937 As we were having food theme this week and Debo really do like cooking, so we were having pretend play on cooking and buying from market.

What we had for the our “Restaurant”:
(from left) Tiny bottles, cutlery sets, bowls, measuring cups, pouring container, cups and teapot, hamburger and pizza on plate, egg set, saucepan & pot, cooking stove, pepper & salt container, mini refrigerator, cutting board, sieve , handmade microwave oven, cookies & cutters on tray.

I bought this in KL, very nice and creative wrapping paper. We used it as our background, pretending we were in a kitchen.. ha, Debo really pay lots of attentions in finding the ingredients on the wall.

I had made a microwave by using a empty box.. ya.. with two handle inside the box as the medal rack. A bit lazy so just use few masking tape to hold the cardboard.. haha.

 market place

Here is our Market Place. We had market shop, bakery shop, ice cream & sweet shop, book & hat shop, and lastly was florist shop. I putted some “goods” in front of the shop for Debo to pick and buy.
To know how to make the Market Place, read on the post of DIY – Market Place.

When Debo saw all these shops, she really went crazy and start picking up her “ingredients”, regardless Mama (that is me).. asking her to “PAY” before take. Well, she just took her cookware and cook in front of the “market place” here….She was too enjoying HERSELF..

I thought to add in this dough with food tool in our pretend play, but the dough included inside the box was too “liquid” so it just stick at our hand and really hard to make any shape. So, we end up just playing the cookware that we had and keeping up these dough set. These were bought in Brunei… ooo… I guess I will only buy Play Dough brand in the future.

Treasure Basket – Orange Colour

I had got this idea from Counting Coconut blog, an interesting blog sharing lots of fun ideas on teaching kids. It is simple and the idea of this is to explore the children sense in all kind of areas (sound, touch, seeing, etc). What we need to do is just to gather few objects, roughly five to ten with various characteristics (shapes, texture, colour, etc) based on the topic you choose. Just find the objects around the house and use what usually can be seen by children. No cost needed, easy and fast to get it ready.

As along with our tot schooling – Letter E week with colour theme of Orange colour, topic for our first treasure basket will be Orange Basket. To make Debo further learning the colours, I had add in the orange colour card with both Chinese and English words inside the basket.

20130607_144825
What we had in the basket?
  1. Nemo toy (Her favourite)
  2. Orange colour ice-cream stick
  3. Orange (fake one…of course)
  4. Sun made with felt
  5. Tin cover
  6. Small bowl

Debo shouted and excited seeing her Nemo toy was inside the basket… She really enjoy playing the basket, pulling out and in the objects into the basket, bringing the basket around… It is simple but fun and really do inspired children to learn, will keep on with this for our next tot schooling !!

DIY – Market Place

I found this printout from HomeschoolShare. I just printed out the last few pages to make a market place for Debo to “get” ingredients for her restaurant pretend play. We had few shops in our market place: Bakery shop, Market shop, Florist shop, Sweet Ice cream shop, Bookstore, and shop selling hats.

20130525_002523

Materials needed:
  1. Brown colour mahjong paper
  2. Empty boxes, can also use bags or cardboard that can make it stand alone
  3. Printout of the shops

Step by step:

  1. Print out the colourful shops and cut accordingly.

2.   Paste the mahjong paper over the empty box. I was using Debo snack box, so had to put cover it to make it look more like a “building”

3.     Glue the printout on the box, fold the “roof” nicely to make it look more 3D.
